Публічна дискусія: Видавництво та книгорозповсюдження в Грузії

The public presentation and discussion of the study Book Publishing and Bookselling in Georgia took place in the Liberty Digital Hall of the Parliamentary Library of Georgia on January 24, 2014. The discussion was attended by over 40 publishers, translators, researchers, publishers, and other stakeholders, who gathered to analyze and discuss the outcomes of the study.

The event was opened by Salome Maghlakelidze, local project manager in Georgia, who made an introduction speech about Book Platform project and specifically about this research, conducted by the experts Tamara Janashia and Giorgi Sabanadze. In the first part Giorgi Sabanadze spoke about the process of research, communication with publishers, problems and benefits they received during the process of distribution of questionnaires. All in all this study is based on a survey of thirty-four publishing companies, three distributors and twelve bookstores which agreed to complete a detailed questionnaire on all aspects of the book business in Georgia. The other expert Tamara Janashia who gathered general information on the state of the economy, education, book publishing, licensing, and the library and state programs, summarized briefly but comprehensively the whole process. The experts presented as well the survey methodology, scope and limitation of the study.

The presentation of the study results was followed by a lively discussion, which involved valuable comments and remarks by the audience. Tamar Lebanidze, representative of Diogene Publishing House, shared her opinion that there might be some issues in the process of research making. Natia Lursmanashvili, representing a major Georgian electronic book shop, made an important remark about the number of E-books distribution as presented in the research. Overall, this research was the first ever attempt to analyze the industry based on direct information provided by stakeholders and on all static data that can be found from a wide array sources. The audience was satisfied with the overall result, and expressed their gratitude to the Book Platform project and Georgian Publishers Association.

One of the Publishers Mamuka Khantadze expressed her opinion that "this is the great beginning which will be a very important bases for the future researches about book publishing and bookselling in Georgia". Oliver Reisner, representative of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, attended and was actively involved in the discussion. He pointed out that this research on the book publishing in Georgia has quite important value, and it will support the development of the Georgian book market.

The public discussion was organized in cooperation with the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia – kind host of the event.
