Forthcoming: Book Platform Interns to Embark on a New Learning Experience

In the forthcoming two months, four book professionals from Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine will get the chance to look into the secrets of the successes
of their colleagues in other countries by participating into the daily work of EU-based organizations. The Book Platform Internships program will support:
1. Irine Tchogoshvili (Georgia), Project Manager at Program in Support of Georgian Book and Literature at the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia for a 7-day internship at the Dutch Foundation for Literature (TBC); 2. Seda Shekoyan (Armenia), Project Director at the Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art and a Columnist at "Hraparak" Daily and Online Newspaper for a 7-day internship at Free Word Center in London (TBC) 3. Armen Martyrosyan (Armenia), director of Antares Publishing House, for a 7-day internship at the German Publishers & Booksellers Association 4. Oleskandra Koval (Ukraine), president of Publishers Forum - Lviv for a 7-day internship at the Polish Book Institute and Books from Lithuania Book Platform and local partners have invited several pre-selected organizations from Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine to offer proposals for the Internships on Reading Promotion and Promotion of Translations. The applicants above have been selected based on the eligibility of their proposals, on past experiences and on the potential for utilizing their new skills and knowledge into their home organizations. Book Platform at London Book Fair 2014

This year London Book Fair took place between 8 and 10 April. The Book Platform project was
presented at the fair by the Armenian and Georgian project partners. Arevik Ashkharoyan, Executive Director of Armenian Literature
Foundation and Book Platform local project manager, participated at the fair as part of the Armenian Pavilion. Ms. Askharoyan had around 40 preplanned meetings with international
publishers, agents, and representatives of cultural organizations, to represent the Foundation and present the Book Platform activities. Read more...

Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association, in its capacity of Book Platform project local partner, was proudly and willingly presenting the project and its results to the visitors of the Georgian stand, offering published surveys, as well as informational and promotional materials. Visitors were interested and happy to get brochures, bookmarks and bags, and to learn more about the project. Salome Maghlakelidze, project local manager in Georgia, was there to introduce the project to everyone interested. Read more... | ||

Events Participation: Ukrainian Participants at Salon du Livre 2014
|
With the support of the Book Platform Events
Participation Support Scheme, two publishers – Anetta Antonenko (Calvaria Publishing House) and
Mykola Kravchenko (Nora Druk Publishing House), and one author – Maryna Hrymych, took part in Salon du Livre 2014 (Paris, Bordeaux and Strasbourg, France) – one of the largest book forums in the world.
Ukrainian publishers had a number of business meetings, managed to strengthen the already established contacts with French publishers, and to develop new ones. The aims of the trip were
fully achieved and the participants expect to have practical outcomes in the nearest future. Read more...

Events Participation: Armenian Participants at London Book Fair 2014
| With the support of the Book Platform Events Participation Support Scheme, 2 participants from Armenia – Nairi Hakhverdi, translator at 1st Armenian Literary Agency, and Khachik Grigoryan, Director of Ankyunacar Publishing House, took part in London Book Fair 2014 (8-10 April). Ms. Hakhverdi's primary goal going to the London Book Fair was to create new connections in the book world and to extend already existing ties, and she believes that she "succeeded in both". For Mr. Grigoryan the Fair was the perfect opportunity to have meetings with number of British and non-British publishers with theological titles among their line of books, to establishing and strength relations with publishing houses and authors of the Armenian Diaspora, and to gain insight into the latest trends and developments in publishing. Events Participation: Georgian Participants at London Book Fair 2014

With the support of the Book Platform Events
Participation Support Scheme, two participants from Georgia – Natia Lursmanashvili and Alexander Jakhua, representing the online library and retailer Lit.ge ("Literacy" Ltd.), took part in London Book Fair
2014 (8-10 April) – one of the largest book forums in the world. The main focus of "Literacy" is
the creation of multimedia books and application, and the development of e-book selling infrastructure. The participants found the fair extremely helpful, as a lot of business ideas,
new technologies and standards were presented, which will enable them to further develop their company and offer digital content with much higher quality to the Georgian

Conference on Culture in the EU External Relations 2014

The Conference on Culture in the EU External
Relations (Brussels, 7-8 April 2014) was a truly unique indication that culture is taken seriously by the Commission, beyond its Education and Culture Unit. Conceived as
a concluding event of a 2-year-long work in preparing Report & Recommendations on Culture in EU External Relations, the conference was much more than a visibility action for the
Report team and the EU External Action Service that had commissioned it. Speakers and moderators made an effort to make explicit many of the internal tensions in both the concept of
cultural diplomacy and its potential application in the EU foreign relations policy. Read

Ukrainian Book Publishing to Face Hard Times Ahead
|
Recently Publishing Perspectives posted an article by Eugene Gerden, drawing the attention to
possible negative consequences to the Ukrainian publishing market as a result of the tense political situation in the country. The Ukrainian
government was considering abolishing the existing tax benefits and other incentives to the domestic book publishing industry within the first package of the governmental anti-crisis
program of actions, aiming to raise additional funds for the state budget. Ukrainian publishers could lose favorable VAT and income tax benefits, new bookstores openings were about to
be postponed, and subsidies to pay for the interest on bank loans taken by Ukrainian publishers were about to be cut.
These measures met the immediate and severe criticism of publishers and all people interested in book
issues in Ukraine. Thanks to the quick reaction of the Board of Ukrainian Publishers and Booksellers Association, the reported measures were postponed till the beginning of next year
(January 1, 2015), yet there have been no talks about the extension of these benefits for the next years. Read more...

Visiting News: The IPA Freedom to Publish Award 2014 goes to Ihar Lohvinau from Belarus
| The winners of the London Book Fair International Book Industry Excellence Awards, in association with the International Publishers Association, were announced at a prestigious Awards ceremony held on the first day of the London Book Fair. Sixteen awards were presented recognizing industry achievement across the globe, acknowledging the book world's "collective success in crossing borders, cultures and languages," in Jacks Thomas' words. In one of the evening's most moving moments Alexandra Logvinova from the House of Literature in Belarus accepted the IPA Freedom to Publish Award on behalf of her father, Ihar Lohvinau, whose publishing work in Belarus has been banned by the Ministry of Information. Łohvinaŭ Publishing House had a representative - Pavel Kostyukevich, art-director and international projects' coordinator, at the workshop on Promotion of Literature in Translation, which was organized within the Book Platform project and took place on 21-22 February 2014, in Yerevan, Armenia.
