Guram Dochanashvili

Guram Dochanashvili was born in Tbilisi on March 26th of 1936. In 1957, he completed high school and music college (violin). He enrolled in the History Faculty of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University in the same year. He was an active participant in archaeological excavations and played in the University orchestra. He graduated from the university in 1962. From 1962 to 1975, Guram Dochanashvili worked in the Archaeological Department of History at the Ivane Javakhshvili Archaeology and Ethnography Institute. From 1975 to 1985 he was head of the prose department of the journal "Mnatobi", and headed the prose section of the Academy of Sciences. Since 1985 he has been the main editor at the "Georgian Film" film studio. Guram Dochanashvili's first short stories were printed in the journal "Tsiskari" in 1961. Since then, his short stories and novels have been published regularly. Today Guram Dochanashvili is one of the most popular writers in Georgia and his novel "The First Robe" has become a modern Georgian classic. In 2010 he received Honorary award SABA for his contribution to the literature.

This novel is based on the motif of the Gospel parable of the Prodigal Son. Its main hero is Domenic, the younger son of the most powerful villager. He is greatly influenced by the story told by the fugitive, a person gripped by a mysterious fear. Domenic demands of his father his share of the inheritance and leaves to get to know the world. In this novel, traditional motifs of good, evil, love, morality and the like are illuminated in a new light and unfold as dramatic narratives against a background of an odd merging of humour and aesthetics. There are many memorable faces in the novel. The narrative is easy-going and dynamic, and is accompanied by bold linguistic experiments that create a textual fabric that is utterly peerless and uniquely characteristic of Guram Dochanashvili.
