Public Discussion on Readership in Ukraine
April 08 and June 26, 2014
A preliminary presentation and discussion of the results of the research on reading habits and attitude towards reading was held on April 08, 2014 during the annual reporting meeting of the Ukrainian
Publishers and Booksellers Association. The research was carried out by the Pro.mova company and commissioned by NGO Publishers' Forum within the Book Platform project.
The results of the complex sociological research were presented by the President of Publishers' Forum – Oleksandra Koval, who mentioned that "the participants of the meeting were the first to have the unique opportunity to get acquainted with the conclusions of such a large-scale research on reading in Ukraine". Among the audience there were more than 70 directors and editors of publishing houses – members of the association, journalists, and also authority representatives – Murakhovskyi Anatoliy, First Deputy Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, Polyanskyi Pavlo, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Kononenko Oleksiy, Director of the Department of Bookpublishing, Printing and Press of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine. Participants of the meeting referred to the results of the research in their further speeches, which reveals its relevance. President of the UPBA Oleksandr Afonin attracted publishers' attention to the fact that they should adequately react to the changes, which occur to readers nowadays.
Further presentations of the research and discussions with representatives of interested environments are planned for the next months, as the results of such a large-scale research require multiple discussions and consideration. The project team, sociologists and experts are currently working on the Ukrainian and English publications of the research results, which will be presented in May.
